Fargemetoden bidrar til en visuell vurdering av celleveggens evne til \u00e5 holde p\u00e5 fargen krystallfiolett-jodid i n\u00e6rv\u00e6r av etanol. P\u00e5 grunn av celleveggen i grampositive bakteriers dominerende innhold av <strong>peptidoglykan<\/strong> og <strong>teikoidsyre<\/strong>, holdes krystallfiolett-jodid tilbake i celleveggen selv om man avfarger med etanol.
